SELF LIGATING AND BIOMECHANICS:

A combination to increase the efficiency in our daily orthodontic practice.

Nowadays, low friction techniques play a major role in daily orthodontic clinical practice and self-ligating brackets are very common in the orthodontic marketplace

with many manufacturers offering several kind of brackets. An important role in order to achieve excellent results with orthodontic treatment is played by some critical

factors like:

– choosing the correct and adequate wire sequence

– the quality of control of anchorage and side effects of dental movements

– the quality of finishing and torque management

The aims of this lecture will be to point out, following a fifteen years’ experience with self-ligating brackets, the clinical advantages and the different ways to control the critical steps in low friction systems in order to gain the excellence treating our patients without wasting time. The advantages of Dual Activation in order to reduce dental movement side effects, anchorage stress and improve treatment efficiency and the combination of this with a rationale wire sequence will be presented.

Furthermore the advantages of combining the variable torque prescriptions with the principles of low friction technique and self-ligating brackets will be highlighted. This approach on torque control allows an optimization of finishing, occlusal relationship and aesthetic result. Furthermore, the consequent treatment time reduction could play a key role in therapy management success.

Dr. Manzo graduated cum laude in Dentistry (DDS) in 1997. He completed his post-graduation in Orthodontics and Gnathology in 2004, and in 2007 he received a PhD in Oral Science at University of Naples “Federico II”, where he has been Visiting Professor from 2008 to 2016.

He is Visiting Professor of the Orthodontic School of Ferrara and Trieste University.

He was AIDOR President in 2020.

Dr Manzo received the excellence certification by the Italian Board of Orthodontics (I.B.O.) in 2007, by the

European Board of Orthodontics (E.B.O.) in 2011 and by the European Board of Lingual Orthodontics (E.B.L.O.) in 2014. He is on-going for the Angle Society of Europe pathway.
