LEVEL OF STUDIES
The student, after finishing the course and passing the subjects required by the Program designed by Athenea Dental Institute and validated by San Jorge University, will obtain the following diplomas:
• Diploma in Expertise in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics with the academic load of
20 ECTS, issued by Athenea Dental Institute
• Título Propio de Postgrado: Experto Universitario en Ortodoncia y Ortopedia Dentofacial

DESCRIPTION
Through this Course Program, the student will obtain the knowledge necessary to carry out the diagnosis of different malocclusions, both in children and adults, and to carry out the treatment of mild and moderate malocclusions and planning of the post-treatment stability as well as the management of patients after the orthodontic treatment.

LEARNING RESULTS
At the end of this Course Program, the student will be able to:
• Carry out the diagnosis and treatment plan in orthodontics in mild and moderate cases.
• Carry out the orthodontic and orthopedic treatments.
• Carry out the orthodontic part in an interdisciplinary treatment.

VALIDATION
The course DIPLOMA OF UNIVERSITY EXPERT IN ORTHODONTICS AND DENTOFACIAL ORTHOPEDICS by ATHENEA DENTAL INSTITUTE, is validated by the SAN JORGE University from Zaragoza (Spain).
This course consists of 144 hours of in-classroom classes and 356 hours of independent work, giving a total of 500 hours. The student will obtain 20 ECTS credits.

MODULE 1  – September 28-29-30, 2023
Subject 1: Diagnosis (1st and 2nd day)
Program:
• Clinical history
• Functional examination
• Classification of malocclusions
• Model study by ages
• Ricketts, Roth-Jarabak Cephalometry
• Superimposition of cephalometry tracings – Dynamic cephalometry
• Conversion of cephalometry tracing from Maximal Occlusion to Centric Relation
• Interpretation of values and decision taking
• Treatment plan execution

Subject 9: Expertise Thesis (3rd day)
Program:
• Health sciences research
• Types of scientific studies
• Scientific study design
• Interpretation and analysis of biomedical documents
• Oral communication
• Elaboration of an Expertise Thesis research work

MODULE 2 – December 6-7-8, 2024
Subject 2: Early treatment in mixed dentition (1st and 2nd day)
Program:
• Concept of early treatment in 1 or 2 phases
• Interceptive treatment
• Posterior cross bite treatment
• Anterior deep bite treatment
• Increased overjet treatment
• Skeletal Class II treatment
• Skeletal Class III treatment
Hands-on: Adjustment of removable appliances.

Subject 3: Treatment in permanent dentition 1 (3rd day)
Program:
• Principles of orthodontic technique.
• Differences in treatments with metallic, esthetic or self-ligating brackets.
• Customized prescription: diagnosis and execution.
• Direct bonding.
• Indirect bonding.
Hands-on: Direct bonding of brackets on typodont.

MODULE 3 – February 22-23-24, 2024
Subject 3: Treatment in permanent dentition (1st day)
Program:
• Treatment of different malocclusions with self-ligating brackets.
• Hands-on:
• Adjustment and insertion of arch wires on typodont with self-ligating
• brackets.

Subject 4: Class I treatment (2 ECTS)
Program:
• Class I Diagnosis.
• Non-extraction treatment of crowding cases.
• Case treatment with stripping.
• Non-extraction treatments.
• Extraction treatments with and without microimplants.
• Treatments of positive discrepancy cases: spacing and agenesia..

MODULE 4 – April 18-19-20, 2024
Subject 5: Treatment of malocclusions in transverse plane (2 ECTS)
Program:
• Anterior cross bite treatment: expansion and separation
• Expansion in mandible
• Asymmetric expansion

Hands-on:
• Adjustment and insertion of arch wires on typodont according the explained treatments
• Adjustment of transpalatal bars, Quad-helix and lingual arches

Subject 6: Class II treatment (2 ECTS)
Program:
• Class II diagnosis.
• Treatment with distalization with and without microimplants
• Treatment with mandibular advancement.
• Non-extraction treatment.
• Extraction treatment.
Hands-on:
• Adjustment and insertion of arch wires on typodont according the explained treatments
• Adjustment of Pendulum appliance.

MODULE 5 – May 23-24-25, 2024
Subject 5: Treatment of malocclusions in vertical plane (2 ECTS)
Program:
• Anterior open bite treatment with and without microimplants
• Anterior deep bite treatment with or without microimplants
• Occlusal plane treatment: counter clock-wise and clock-wise rotation and transverse inclination
Hands-on:
• Adjustment and insertion of arch wires on typodont according the explained treatments
Subject 7: Class III treatment (2 ECTS)
Program:
• Class III diagnosis
• Non-extraction treatment
• Treatment with anterior traction
• Treatment with distalization in mandible with microimplants

Hands-on:
• Adjustment and insertion of arch wires on typodont according the explained treatments
• Adjustment of utility arch wires

MODULE 6 – July 11-12-13 2024
Subject 8: Case finishing and retention (2 ECTS)
Program:
• Case study for treatment finishing
• 1st, 2nd and 3rd order adjustments
• Intermaxillary adjustments
• Occlusal adjustment by selective trimming
• Esthetic adjustments
• Retention appliances

Hands-on:
• Fabrication and adjustment of finishing arch wires
• Exam in the afternoon
Subject 9: Expertise Thesis (4 ECTS)
Program:
• Defense of an Expertise Thesis research work
